For decades, engineering education in Bangladesh has remained heavily theory-based, keeping students confined to textbooks rather than pushing them toward real-world application. However, a major shift is happening as local students dive headfirst into hands-on motorsport engineering. Across the globe, top universities heavily encourage their students' participation in international Formula Student competitions, where they must design, build, and race their own high-performance vehicles. Breaking the traditional academic mold, the Formula IUT team from the Islamic University of Technology has successfully taken up this ambitious challenge, proving that practical, student-led innovation can truly thrive in Bangladesh.
The Journey of the Formula IUT team
Starting in late 2021, what began as a shared passion among a small group of automotive enthusiasts has rapidly evolved into a powerhouse of cross-disciplinary talent. Today, the Formula IUT team boasts over 90 active members for the highly anticipated 2026 season. These bright minds hail from various departments, including Mechanical Engineering, Industrial and Production Engineering, and Business and Technology Management.
Their crowning achievement is a fully functional Formula-style race car powered by a robust KTM Duke 390 engine. The vehicle features a rugged stainless-steel space frame chassis, double A-arm suspension, and runs on 91-octane fuel. However, the path to the finish line was far from easy. High-performance parts like slick racing tyres and carbon fibre components are virtually non-existent in the local market. Furthermore, while foreign competitors benefit from fully equipped, dedicated workshops, the Formula IUT team had to creatively overcome inadequate workspace facilities and a severe lack of specialized manufacturing equipment.
Overcoming Challenges and Looking Ahead
Since 2022, the dedicated students have invested around BDT 12 lakh into designing and manufacturing their vehicle, relying heavily on self-funding, contributions from university alumni, and local sponsors. This immense financial and physical dedication has paid off brilliantly. The Formula IUT team has proudly represented Bangladesh on highly competitive global stages. Their impressive track record includes finishing eighth in the Business Plan Presentation at Formula Student China 2025, securing an impressive seventh place at Formula Imperial 2024, and taking third in Class I at Formula Bharat 2023.
Expanding the Horizon
Currently, the Formula IUT team is meticulously designing their next-generation 2026 vehicle, focusing heavily on significant weight reduction while maximizing the engine's torque output. They are also actively participating in the virtual IMechE Formula Student Sim Racing Series, recently making history as the first Bangladeshi squad to achieve a double-point finish.
As they continue to push technical boundaries, their future roadmap includes pivoting toward advanced electric and autonomous vehicle categories.
